A Kampong House
Oil on Canvas
80cm x 55.5cm

CREATION OF PAINTING
i) What do you want to do?
I want to paint a Malaysian landscape re kampong house.

ii) Where do you get the idea/ /concept?
I got the idea after visiting a kampong house in Kampong Chengkau Ulu, Kota Rembau, Negeri Sembilan during, last Hari Raya open house. The house belongs to chef Ismail, a popular and well known Malaysian Chef.

iii) Why do you choose this topic?
It looks like a typical Malaysian kampong house but on the other hand it is very original and unique in its own way. I was very impressed and fascinated by the wood carving and the intrinsic value cum the Malaysia heritage style of the aforesaid kampong house. Therefore it gives me the inspiration to paint a Malaysian landscape with kampong house thereat.

iv) What are your favourite things about your work?
It is a reflection of my visit to a kampong. I love the picture of the kampong house on sandy ground with coconut trees, bushes, and shrubs around. It clearly show the real typical Malaysian kampong house and kindle my fond memories of my visit to a kampong.

v) How do you start to work?
I snap a few photograph of the chef Ismail's kampong house and surroundings. I used these photographs as my reference in my creation of painting. I begin my drawing by painting the whole canvas brownish using 3 different types of oil colours namely Burnt Sienna , Burnt Umber and Raw Sienna mixed together with a lot of turpentine to make it very dilute and light in colour. After dried, I start painting the clouds and the surrounding trees, bushes, shrubs and plants. Next, I paint the kampong house and the river. Lastly I only paint the coconut trees.

vi) How do you feel about your work?
By looking at the piece of painting, rekindles my fond memories of my visit to a kampong and the Malaysian heritage style of the kampong house that I've seen. I felt very peaceful and fresh with the wide open compound and green natural surroundings with trees, bushes, shrubs and plants. I could feel the closeness to nature and just fell in love with it.
